I think you mean the SO-239 connector, PL-259 is the one with the pin connection. Strip a bit of the the end of the wire so that the inside thread is exposed, twist the end about half an inch in length so that it is thick enough to go into the hole of the SO0239 connection & at the same time be secure without becoming loose.

No, you are not understanding what this video is about. It is to see how good the ATU of each transceiver is by using the most basic of antennas. Yes a a better antenna would have given improved results, but I'm showing which tunes best.

Thanks for this informative review. I'm a member of the G90 team as well and I really like it a lot. I only do SSB, no digital modes and I always get compliments for the quality of my audio. These days I work portable from coastal Brittany with just the G90 and simple vertical antennas and I'm able to work VK/ZL stations almost every morning and quite a few US and South American stations in the late afternoon/evening. The G90 + the salt water boost effect is a winning combination. I don't need more! Temperature in Brittany is kind of chilly now, especially in the morning, so I don't quite need extra cooling for it 😁

DFU is used for flashing firmware. Does the CPS use the same lead and system for programming, or does it use a normal USB to serial lead like analogue handhelds? I am a bit confused. Just waiting on the radio arriving, but i have read that the internal microphone can be damaged if you power on with programming lead plugged in. I am not sure what lead they are referring to. I got the STM driver. The latest one is OK for Win 11.

The claim that analogue broadcasting is not 'green' is a great example of greenwashing. It does not hold up because it focuses on only one of the aspects of content delivery, which is the energy consumption of transmitters. It completely omits another aspects, like the energy consumption of receivers (multiple times higher in case of DAB receivers, not to mention cell phones) or the environmental costs of electronic equipment manufacturing and recycling (affecting both transmitters and receivers). This is because the companies who are pushing DAB radio are mostly electronic manufacturing companies, they do not care about any environmental impact of their operation (despite claiming to be doing so), they do not care about billions of working radios being sent to some 3rd world landfill - they just want to sell new TX&RX equipment and will pursue that goal at any costs - like every other business does. Mandating conversion to digital through government interventions (even in countries where DAB listening is almost non-existent and despite the fact that DAB practically does not exist outside Europe) seems to them like a great way to achieve it - who would care about things like market competition when you can just make the gov order everyone to buy a radio receiver that you *accidentally* happen to be offering? I support going green 100% wherever it's possible, but going green should always mean buying less, using everything as long as it's possible and therefore, in case of radio, every government should take the customers' side, stand in the way of DAB lobbying, reject their agenda and any forced switch-over dates. Digital radio can exist alongside analogue AM and FM. The focus should be put on meaningful actions, like supplying the transmitters (and the whole industry) with renewable energy, because this is what actually helps the environment. If Radio Caroline could do it with their 648 MW transmitter, everyone can do it.

Wow.. this was a memory unlock, this was actually my 2nd scanner after my 1st scanner an equally cheap scanner with a useless rubber duck. Great fun listening to the airband my local frequency was London Control Brecon Zone on 133.6 One of the few frequencies never to change in over 40 years. Good for listening to transatlantic flight descending into Heathrow. I miss the old call signs like Cipper, TWA, Dan Air, Jetset.. here we would have British gas coms above the airband, then ham radio, police walkie talkies, traffic police and up to taxis and other 2 way stuff. Australia & NZ can't even let go of AM broadcasting let alone FM. Not likely to happen here - not for a very long time. Case in point - R.Aotearoa recently started on 1368khz. Why? Who would listen to music non AM radio in this day & age? Another eg - 3GL Geelong starting again on 1341 - music on AM radio

In case of Poland, as I see it mentioned in the article, things are kinda more complex. Large commercial networks don't want to broadcast in DAB+ saying it is an old technology in wake of streaming being more & more prevalent. But at the same time I don't think they'll be willing to give up their FM frequencies unless pressed by an eventual government-imposed deadline. Public Polskie Radio is the only group with nationwide DAB+ coverage. However, our broadcast regulator's chief officer said recently that one needs to be careful about considering turning off FM given the geopolitical situation we're in, as FM is still so easy to access, everyone has an FM radio, and thus it may be needed in an emergency. (BTW he didn't say the same thing about longwave, even though 225 kHz is still active...) That said, that man turned his institution into a tool of political pressure in favour for now-opposition right-wing PiS party, and the new broad-coalition government wants to impeach him :)

I had some cheap £20 thing, looked a bit cheaper, 4xAA cells thing out of one of the national papers, Guess sport or the sun. One of the more downmarket papers because the cheap but similar thing had on the advert and a selling point. Listen to "Bonking Neighbours", near did hear that. Really how was that going to work, baby monitor in the room!, Daft selling point!. Cordless phones. They where easy to do. Even a normal radio could I read back in the day, make me feel old. Did police. Remember that. Now the cheap chinese radios do so much more for less money or say this was £20 in 1990. Quansheng I got now 34 years on. £20. So cheaper as inflation. As you mentioned, All emergency services on that Tetra now. 2000's thing. Mobile phones up at 800-900Mhz, analogue. 1990's could listen on the first handheld Alinco amateur radio. Nice optional extra wideband RX board I think, Was a fair few hundred quid, 2nd hand from the London way shop. Martin Lynch or one of the other names still around. DMR decode on the SDR thing on computer with some software running on top. Got talkie talkies, some work place or so, not worked out what, boring. Should not be nosey really. I got local Taxi, really is, just same end of town on industrial estate, See the antenna on the cabin, office. That 160 something, analogue, china's finest £20 do that as all the scanners, transcievers would. How things cheap now and have a nice RX range and TX thrown in as an extra!. Got some amateur radio videos but not really a radio person. Just the £20 thing when out and about, mostly get nowt back and a high pint, see 30 miles, disappointment Radio now I find, wrong stuff (handhelds and not going on nice antenna at home no more, screwed up the telly) and band I guess, never done the lower stuff, 2m/70cm on and off from 1994.

Mine came with the stock firmware. I found it impossible to use the programming software. It crashes almost every time. The open gd77 firmware and its companion programming software works fine.

Sorry to hear. Its too much of a gamble for me because the radios are too old now.

Wow, this takes me back! Our shop used to sell these in (I think) the early 80's. They were popular with schoolboys who couldn't afford afford the synthesised models from AOR, Regency and Tandy (Radio Shack). Tuning was fiddly because of the simple analogue tuning, but they were a lot of fun. They could receive the police VHF band which was mostly traffic police but not the UHF 'personal comms'. I don't remember any faults on them so they must have been pretty reliable. Of course almost everything in the UK has gone to digital (DMR and TETRA mainly) so analogue radios like this are of not much use.

They were great alternatives when we could not afford anything more upmarket. Thanks for watching.

The XHDATA isn't as sensitive on FM compared to the Tecsuns but does offer RDS.

The best FM portable I had before the TEF was the Tecsun PL-390. Same performance as the TEF but lacks the bandwidth filters & RDS.

Good review. I bought the xhdata d808 and the tecsun pl300 to test both and ended keeping the tecsun as appeared slightly more robust ie embedded tuning buttons a more robust speaker cover (i like to through it in a rucksack) . However the xhdata is an amazing radio. The xhdata also has a slightly richer but noticeable sound quality than the tecsun. Both of them offer amazing bang for buck.

Agreed, easily the best value portable. Good audio for a small speaker too 👍🏼 My only complaints are the soft muting and how the ETM search function stores frequencies into separate pages. I prefer how with Tecsun radios you just scroll through them without having to enter the next page.

Soft muting continues to be the plague for many portables...a shame

It's the digital chip that causes this. It sucks but DSP is still pretty good

Great to see this type of tropo from you car radio my friend :) Here in Malta today we are having a good tropo noticing one station towards Napoli, skipping the whole Sicily on catching Rado Kiss Kiss via RDS. Cheers John 73!

Reminds me of my first car. Well, it wasn't actually a "car" but more of a little- red wagon, but I called it my "car". It hasn't really been long since the encryption on cellular phones was so poor that methods for decrypting the signal were shared on the internet. Even after that happened, companies did nothing to improve the situation for years. I used to listen to phone conversations and set up a sort of trunk tracker to move to the predictable nearby cells as the phone moved. You still needed a digital-to-analog converter and a scanner modified to receive those frequencies.
